The Four Stages of Hair Growth

It may seem simple to grow and lose hair, but the hair growth cycle consists of four distinct phases. Much research has been done on these stages of hair growth to understand how hair grows and how premature hair loss can be prevented or treated.

Anagen, catagen, and telogen are the three phases in which hair grows, matures, and produces hair. It is during the final exogen phase that "old" hair sheds, although new hair is usually ready to replace it.

The timeline for each phase can vary depending on an individual's age, nutrition, and overall health. Orium was developed to boost these steps to ensure your hair follows a healthy growth cycle.

1. Anagen –  The period of growth

Anagen is the first stage of hair growth. Most hairs on your head will grow in this phase for about 3 to 5 years, but some can continue to grow for as long as 7 years.

The anagen phase differs depending on what type of hair you have. For example, hairs on your eyebrows and pubic regions undergo a much shorter anagen phase than hairs on your scalp.

Your hair follicles are pushing out hairs that will continue to grow until they are cut or until they reach the end of their lives and fall out. It is estimated that 90 per cent of the hairs on your head are in the anagen phase at any given time.

2. Catagen – Phase of transition

Approximately 10 days after the anagen phase ends, the catagen phase begins. Hair follicles shrink, and hair growth slows down during this chapter. During the final growth stages, the hair also separates from the bottom of the hair follicle. In any given period, approximately 5 per cent of your hairs are in the catagen phase.

3. Telogen – The period of rest

Typically, the telogen phase lasts around three months. The percentage of scalp hairs in this phase is estimated at 10 to 15 per cent.

During the telogen phase, hair doesn't grow, but it also doesn't fall out. It is also during the telogen phase that hair starts to grow from catagen-stage follicles.

4. Exogen: The process of shedding

Hair growth in the exogen phase is essentially an extension of the telogen phase. Hair sheds from the scalp during the exogen phase, which is often aided by washing and brushing. It is normal to lose 50 to 100 hairs a day during the exogen phase.

The exogen phase lasts about two to five months, during which new hairs grow in the follicles as old hairs fall out.

Maintain healthy hair during all four stages of its life.

Good nutrition

What we eat makes a difference in how our body functions naturally, and it is well known that a balanced diet is essential for optimum health. Our hair needs nutrients, proteins, vitamins and other essentials to maintain its natural state. Orium is formulated to address any imbalance in nutrition so that the hair can continue through a healthy growth cycle.

According to a 2019 study in Dermatology and Therapy, sufficient intake of the following nutrients was associated with healthy hair growth.

  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin C
  • Iron
  • Zinc, folic acid, and vitamin B12, all found in Orium, may also promote hair growth.

Stress and Hormones

Throughout our lives, we undergo certain hormonal changes, and science tells us that this can affect how our hair grows and sheds. For example, dihydrotestosterone, or DHT for short, is a hormone present in both men and women and plays a significant part in losing our hair by shrinking the follicles until they fall out. Orium is enriched with natural DHT inhibitors, including Saw Palmetto, which can help balance your DHT levels and prevent hair loss.

Stress causes many issues for the human body, so it is no surprise that it affects hair growth too. The overproduction of cortisol means that hair goes into the telogen phase, receiving no nutrients and stops growing. As a result, the Orium supplement contains active ingredients to ensure hair is continuously being fed and stimulated.

Our environment is full of toxins and pollutants that our bodies work hard to eliminate. However, the more the body absorbs, the more the body is overloaded and unable to keep up with the demand for detoxifying. As a result, antioxidant levels lessen, damaging the hair follicle. Our scientists have formulated Orium to protect against this damage, meaning that healthy hair growth can be yours once more.
